Currently, domestic pangasius exporters are having the benefit when big importers switch to importing Vietnamese pangasius products. Currently, there are more than 150 Vietnamese enterprises participating in exporting seafood to China, of which about 45 enterprises export Pangasius.

Mr. Truong Dinh Hoe, Secretary General of Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) - said that China has been an important market for Vietnamese seafood export in general and pangasius in particular. However, China within loosening its import policy, pangasius is expanding its way into the world's most populous market.

In 2018, the export volume of pangasius to the Chinese market is about 500 million USD and this year is expected to increase by 10-15% compared to last year. Besides, the trend of middle class in China is increasing demand for imported seafood due to food safety concerns. Chinese consumers prefer foreign products and natural exploitation. Especially, willing to spend money on products that have been accepted by the US and European markets. Typically, Vietnamese pangasius products have increased consumption in China since the day they entered the US, ”Mr. Hoe said.

According to business people, Chinese high-class customers have been importing high-quality fillet basa fish from the United States for a long time. Now when trade tension occurs they may choose these items from Vietnam instead.

Improving quality for pangasius

Mr. Truong Dinh Hoe said that in order to reach the export target of over 10% in China this year, the most important factor that pangasius enterprises need to ensure is still quality.

According to Mr. Hoe's analysis, the price of Vietnamese pangasius exported is quite reasonable, so we need to keep the quality stable to take advantage of the previous ones, to avoid being "overtaken" by other countries in the market. Currently, some enterprises such as Nam Viet, Vinh Hoan, Truong Giang and Go Dang ... are doing very well in quality management and have a steady increase in export output, so other units need to pay attention to this issue.

Many businesses said that China is tightening inspection of food safety and small-scale trade, although it may make difficulty for enterprises that only do small quota but will be a leverage for enterprises doing business properly and in compliance, strictly comply with food hygiene and safety standards, helping them increase exports in the future.

Concerning this issue, a pangasius exporter in Tien Giang said that if the company used to mainly do small quota to China, recently it has negotiated with the partner to sign the official contract to avoid price pressures and help the enterprise proactively plan long-term production, stabilize output.

China is no longer a low-quality market but a growing market and sensitive to food safety and hygiene issues, Chinese consumers are looking for imported products that are accepted in European and American markets, including Vietnamese pangasius products.
